About Gate 11 Distillery
Gate 11 Distillery is a craft spirits producer and experiential venue located in Chattanooga's historic Choo-Choo terminal. They produce a diverse portfolio of small-batch spirits including whiskey, gin, vodka, rum, absinthe, and agave spirits, while operating an on-site bar and distillery tour operation.
The Challenge
The rum category is saturated with familiar narratives rooted in escapism and nostalgia.
As a house of brands known for award-winning spirits developed with intention, Gate Eleven Distillery set out to introduce a modern rum brand that honored Caribbean heritage without relying on stereotype or spectacle. The challenge was to create a culturally grounded, premium rum that could stand confidently alongside Gate Eleven’s broader portfolio while resonating with bartenders, buyers, and culturally fluent consumers, and remaining scalable across multiple expressions in a highly competitive category.
Our Approach
Chameleon Collective partnered with Gate Eleven, where I served as Fractional Brand Strategist, Creative Director, and Minority Owner, leading the brand from early concept through launch. The approach centred on language as culture, using “Patois” as both name and narrative framework to reflect shared dialects, rhythms, and identities shaped across Caribbean histories. Working closely with the distilling team, we developed a cohesive brand system encompassing positioning, naming, visual identity, label design, and core messaging. The creative direction emphasised cultural respect over romanticism, bar-forward credibility, and a flexible identity capable of supporting multiple expressions, all designed to translate seamlessly from shelf to back bar.
The Impact
Patois Rum launched as a distinctive, culturally literate addition to Gate Eleven’s house of brands, setting itself apart from conventional rum aesthetics and storytelling. The brand system supported a scalable portfolio across White, Overproof, and Aged expressions, strengthened on-premise adoption, and reinforced Gate Eleven’s reputation for crafting thoughtful, intentional spirits with lasting relevance in the market.
