About Pacific Trellis Fruit - Dulcinea Farms

Pacific Trellis Fruit, marketed under the Dulcinea Farms brand, is a fresh produce grower-shipper specializing in premium melons — including its well-known Tuscan-style cantaloupes, PureHeart seedless watermelons, and Mini Melon personal-sized fruit. The company is a branded-produce innovator in the specialty melon category, supplying retailers across…

The Challenge

Pacific Trellis Fruit acquired the Dulcinea melon brand from Syngenta, a global agricultural technology company known for creating the first personal-sized, seedless watermelon. Despite Syngenta's substantial investment in branding and market introduction, they divested from Dulcinea due to their lack of CPG expertise. Pacific Trellis, a seasoned grower and importer of table grapes and stone fruits, lacked the knowledge to maintain, support, or evolve the Dulcinea brand. For five years, the once-prominent Dulcinea melons were reduced to mere commodity products, losing their premium market positioning.

Our Approach

The first step was to assess the brand's current market reputation and evaluate the marketing team and budget, which had been drastically reduced since the acquisition. The strategy focused on revitalizing Dulcinea's dormant premium positioning and sharpening the brand's identity. Mentorship was provided to the marketing team to equip them with the skills needed to support and sustain the brand's rejuvenation.Next, the product line was expanded, adding innovative melon varieties and premium table grapes under the Dulcinea brand. This product diversification aimed to broaden the revenue base and strengthen the brand's market presence. An integrated marketing campaign was developed, reallocating the limited budget towards branding and consumer awareness. This comprehensive campaign included direct mail, LinkedIn posts, and public relations efforts, such as press releases and interviews with trade press, ensuring broad market visibility.

The Impact

The strategic interventions quickly yielded results. Within the first month, an analysis of melon and table grape sales among all retail trade partners uncovered a $20 million sales opportunity, of which $2 million were realised in the first year. The rebranding and product line extension, combined with the integrated B2B campaign, generated incremental orders from day one. These efforts empowered Pacific Trellis Fruit to reclaim Dulcinea's premium market position, securing sustained success and growth.
