Senior design thinking consulting for product, service, and customer-experience problems
Most "design thinking" engagements deliver three days of facilitated workshops with sticky notes and Miro boards, entertaining theater that rarely changes operating decisions. Our consultants spend the bulk of every engagement on real customer research: interviews, observation, transcript synthesis. Workshops are inputs into the research, not the deliverable.
Real prototypes test specific hypotheses against real users. Most workshop-style design thinking produces "concept directions" that are too high-level to validate. We build prototypes detailed enough to learn from, wireframe, service script, value-prop concept, and run them against the actual users.
We scope every engagement around an operating decision: a product feature to build, a service flow to redesign, a brand pivot to make, a CX program to launch. The design thinking work serves that decision. If we can't see the decision the work will inform, we'll say the engagement isn't the right call.
Design thinking has earned a reputation for producing impressive workshop choreography that doesn't change operating decisions. A Chameleon design thinking consulting engagement is structured to avoid the failure pattern, the workshops are inputs, the research is the heavy lift, and every engagement is scoped against a specific operating decision.
"We need to do design thinking on customer experience" isn't a scope. "We're losing customers in the onboarding window and we need to redesign weeks 1-4 of the experience" is. The first conversation focuses the engagement on the operating decision, what specifically should be different in operations after the engagement ships. Without that anchor, design thinking consulting becomes expensive theater.
The "diverge then converge" pattern in workshop-style design thinking is mostly fictional, most workshops diverge on top of leadership assumptions and converge on whatever the highest-ranking person preferred. We start with research: customer interviews, observation, transcript synthesis, sometimes ethnographic work. The divergent thinking happens against grounded inputs, not against leadership memory.
"Concept direction" prototypes are too vague to learn from. We build prototypes detailed enough to test specific hypotheses, wireframes with enough fidelity to A/B test, service scripts that real associates could read, value-prop concepts with enough copy to evaluate against intent. The prototype is the experiment apparatus, not the deliverable.
Every engagement ends with operating artifacts: a product roadmap with specific features, a service blueprint with specific role assignments, a CX program with specific lifecycle triggers, a brand-position rewrite with specific homepage and deck updates. The design thinking work serves the artifacts; the artifacts are what change behavior.
Tell us what operating decision the engagement is meant to inform. We'll tell you honestly whether design thinking consulting is the right approach, or whether a different methodology (user research alone, strategy work, or just shipping a decision) fits better.
Our design thinking consulting engagements bundle four to six streams, scoped against the operating decision.
| Feature | Chameleon Collective | Design thinking firm (IDEO, Frog, etc.) | In-house team running design thinking |
|---|---|---|---|

| Decision-anchored scope. | Every engagement scoped to operating decision | Often scoped to direction-finding | Variable |
| Senior consultant on the work. | Yes, always | Often partner-led at top tier; senior-light below | In-house |
| Engagement length. | 8-16 weeks | 12-24 weeks typical |
Common questions from teams evaluating design thinking consulting.
Workshops are part of most engagements but rarely the bulk. The heavy lift is customer research and prototype testing. Workshops serve as alignment moments and decision-pressure surfaces, not the deliverable.
Different structure, different price point. IDEO and Frog engagements typically run 12-24 weeks at $200K-$1M+ with multi-disciplinary teams and a partner overseeing. Ours run 8-16 weeks at $60K-$200K with a senior consultant on the work end-to-end. Best fit for the big-firm shape: Fortune 500 multi-year transformation. Best fit for us: scale-up and PE-portfolio operating decisions.
Yes, when capability transfer is part of the scope. The training looks different from a typical "design thinking certification", it focuses on how to run real research, how to design prototypes that test specific hypotheses, and how to anchor every engagement to an operating decision.
Most Chameleon design thinking engagements run $20K-$60K per month, scoped to outcome. Total engagement typically lands $60K-$200K depending on scope.
We'll tell you. Sometimes the right answer is straightforward strategy work, sometimes it's a UX research project (without the design thinking apparatus), sometimes it's just shipping a decision. The label matters less than the operating outcome.
Directly. Chameleon Collective is a senior-only collective. No account-management layer between you and the strategist.
