Find and hire a senior
A senior fractional creative director for brands that need creative leadership across campaigns, brand systems, and in-house teams, without the cost of a full-time hire. Strategy and craft together, agency-independent.

Most fractional creative leads come from one of two worlds: strategy-strong but weak on execution craft, or craft-strong but blind to brand strategy. Our fractional CDs have led creative functions in-house: they bring brand strategy fluency AND visual craft, plus the muscle memory to ship work week to week.
Anyone can deliver a campaign. A fractional CD's job is to build the creative operating system that produces every campaign after they leave: brand guidelines, design systems, copy frameworks, review cadences, agency briefs, hire plans. The system outlasts the engagement.
We don't run a creative agency. Our CDs decide whether your work belongs in-house, with a roster of freelance specialists, or with the right agency: based on the work shape, not a partner commission. We brief and manage agencies when they're the right tool, and rebuild in-house when the agency is the constraint.
Creative leadership is one of the most expensive seats a company hires for, and one of the easiest to get wrong. A great CD costs $250K-$400K all-in, takes six to twelve months to ramp, and most companies don't actually need that role full-time: they need senior creative judgment available across a manageable scope of work. A fractional CD is that arrangement: senior, in-seat, scoped to two or three days a week, owning the creative operating system.
Most companies confuse the campaign for the brand. They invest in launches, holiday creative, and product moments, and then wonder why the work feels inconsistent. Our fractional CDs invert that: build the brand system first (visual identity, voice, components, application rules), and the campaigns get faster, cheaper, and more on-brand as the system matures. The brand book is the asset that compounds.
The most valuable thing a fractional CD does isn't ship work: it's level up the in-house designers and copywriters. Reviews, critiques, hire briefs, growth plans, mentorship cadences. When the engagement ends, the team is stronger than when it started, and the company isn't dependent on the CD to maintain quality. That's the difference between a fractional engagement and an agency retainer: we invest in your people, not in our hours.
Most brands work with multiple agencies: a brand agency, a digital shop, a video production house, a packaging firm. Without a senior in-house creative lead, agencies execute against vague briefs and the work fragments. Our fractional CDs sit on the brand side of the table, write the briefs, review the work, and hold the agencies to a single visual + voice system.
Two-week diagnostic across brand system, in-house team, agency portfolio, and creative review cadence. Where the gaps are, what to fix first, what a 90-day program looks like. Senior CD on it from day one.
Most engagements bundle four to six of these workstreams, scoped against the diagnostic findings.

Common questions from teams evaluating fractional Creative Director engagements.
An agency executes against your brief. A fractional CD writes the brief, sits on your side of the table, manages the agency, and develops your in-house team. The CD's accountability is to your brand strategy and your team's growth. The agency's accountability is to its own deliverables and margins. They're complementary, not substitutes: most engagements end with the CD managing the right agency against a much better brief.
If the work is high in volume and the strategy is clear, you need more designers. If the work is inconsistent, the brand drifts, the team is stuck producing without growing, or there's no senior creative judgment in the room: you need a CD. Volume is a capacity problem; consistency and strategy are a leadership problem. Different solutions.
Week one: brand audit, team interviews, work review. Weeks 2-4: diagnostic and 90-day plan. Weeks 4-12: brand system build, review-cadence install, agency-brief rebuilds, first campaign under new operating model. Most engagements ship visible quality improvement inside 60 days.
Most engagements run $18K-$40K per month at two to three days a week, scoped to outcome. A focused brand-system build plus 90-day operating-model install starts around $35K. Full multi-quarter engagements scale up from there.
Both. Some CDs are concept-and-direct only; ours can also art-direct shoots, write copy, prototype interfaces, and ship final creative when the scope warrants. The split is engagement-specific: for system work, they lead and oversee; for hands-on campaign work, they can ship.
Both options work. Most engagements end with the CD managing the existing agency against a better brief. Sometimes the agency is the constraint and we rebuild in-house or rotate to a different partner. The split comes out of the diagnostic.
Directly. Chameleon Collective is a senior-only collective. No account-management layer between you and the CD.
