Systems Integrations

A wooden playhouse with a slide, climbing ladder, and swings is set on a grassy field under a blue sky with scattered clouds. Four children are playing: one on the slide, one climbing, and two swinging. An adult stands nearby, watching them and ensuring all play systems are safely integrated.

Modernizing Commerce: Integrating Legacy Systems with eCommerce at Backyard Adventures

Challenge:

Backyard Adventures, a builder of custom backyard playsets, relied heavily on their dealer network for sales. They had no eCommerce capabilities and were tethered to a 20-year-old custom software solution for processing dealer orders and communicating with the dealer network. This legacy system needed to be integrated with multiple modern services to bring Backyard’s products online.

Approach:

Zachary Randall spearheaded the technical effort for Backyard Adventures. He coordinated with various technical teams and designed a solution that allowed a new eCommerce site, an interactive playset designer, and the legacy dealer site to function seamlessly together. The legacy system was transferred to an AWS-based hosting solution and was improved with modern web services, enabling communication with other systems. Additionally, the interactive playset designer was migrated to a more scalable, lower-maintenance hosting solution.

Impact:

Since the launch of the new eCommerce platform, Backyard Adventures has seen exponential growth. The booming online sales and the upgraded dealer site have collectively helped expand their dealer network, adding a significant competitive edge to the company.
